In 2014 the Food and Drug Administration requested more trial studies to see how the new drug, flibanserin, trade name, Addy produced by Sprout Pharmaceuticals worked and interacted with other drugs, like birth control pills and medications before getting to approval stages.  They also wanted to see if flibanserin impaired motor skills or driving ability.

Then, on August 18, 2015, the Food and Drug Administration voted to approve the drug flibanserin, often mistakenly referred to as women viagra or female viagra;  describing the benefits as moderate to marginal.  This after having twice before rejected flibanserin, saying previously the side effects outweighed the benefits.

Current side effects that concern the FDA include sleepiness, drop in blood pressure, dizziness, nausea, and fainting.  Also, when the drug flibanserin is combined with alcohol the side effects are increased.  Flibanserin is not the same as Viagra, which increases blood flow to the genital region and is taken when needed.  Flibanserin is to be taken daily, whether you want sex or not and works only on the neurotransmitters in the brain, affecting dopamine and serotonin levels in the hopes of increasing sexual desire.

Safety is a priority and there are lots of tests and studies that need to take place to properly determine the risk/benefit assessment before a new drug can be introduced to the market.  Make no mistake flibanserin is a synthetic drug.  It is not natural.  Even though many drugs get approved by the FDA, one should remember that drugs almost always come with side effects.  Viagra for men can have serious side effects and one must be careful when introducing it or any other drugs into their body.

When Sprout Pharmaceuticals ran one of their double-blind tests over the course of 6 months, it was determined (after accounting for those taking placebo) that only about 10% of women had an increase in the frequency of sexual desire, from two to three times a month to four times a month.  Hardly anything to ride home about.  Also when you take into account the possibility of developing breast cancer tumors with prolonged use over two years, as shown in mice, one should be cautious.  The longest studies to date have only been for an 18 month period.

Everyone knew the FDA was going to eventually give in and approve some form or version of a female Viagra.  The pressure was mounting.  The pharmaceutical industry launched a marketing campaign in 2014, listing a number of women’s groups, to try and sway public opinion and pressure the FDA to approve a woman Viagra.  Making claims about equality and “where is our Viagra” through a campaign called “Even the Score.”

Men’s Viagra was approved after a trial of only 3000 men.  Flibanserin has gone through much tougher trials and is still not approved despite showing signs of helping some women with low libido.  The problem is that low libido is not considered a physical dysfunction like erectile dysfunction is.  Until scientists can agree on a standard to classify low female libido as a physical dysfunction it will be difficult to get flibanserin approved through the FDA in this fashion.

However, it appears Sprout Pharmaceutical’s is taking a different approach.  Claiming the problem of women lies in brain chemistry and not as a physical dysfunction.  They want to treat female sexual desire via neurotransmitters in the brain with flibanserin, the same way depression is treated.  Not by treating blood flow in the genital region as Viagra does.

It is anticipated there will be a female Viagra on the market at some point, that works on the physical level.  The problem, as mentioned is that it could take years before one that works on the physical level comes to market because like Viagra and flibanserin it will come with lots of nasty side effects and have to go through a long approval process.  What women need to understand is there are natural, safer products already on the market right now that have been working very well, on both the physical and mental level, for several years, helping thousands of women by increasing blood flow to the genital area and sexual desire in the brain.
